Reap the benefits of our top genetics

Welcome to the 2011 EP Merino and Poll Merino ram selling season, with about 250 rams on display at Wudinna and about 2000 rams at auctions and at private selection during the year.

On Monday, July 11, our association will be holding its annual Merino and Poll Merino Expo at Wudinna, following-on from the success of the last two years. Eyre Peninsula has become a very popular area to source top genetics from recent years. I am sure your sire requirements can be sourced from our member’s studs.

With a top season experienced last year, the display of rams promises to be of very high standard. Given the uncertainty of gross margins of cropping, our dual-purpose EP Merinos and Poll Merinos have come to the forefront of profitability as they are early-maturing and produce heavy carcase and fleece.

I believe the future of our true dualpurpose Merino has never been better, with demand for wool increasing and prices for wether lambs and excess sheep at all-time highs. I would like to congratulate our members for their dedication to the Merino industry.

Results from the 2010 ram-selling season are on the board. As a sheep breeder, I would like to personally invite you to our annual expo at Wudinna, inspection days, and annual ram sales later in the year.

On behalf of the Association, I would like to acknowledge the generous support of our major sponsor Elders, gold sponsor Landmark and our silver and bronze sponsors.

I wish all members a successful ram selling season in 2011 in what I expect to be a successful year for all involved.

Graeme Lawrie,
President, EPSMBA.
