While not one of the state’s largest studs, Grant and Carolyn Johnson’s Carcuma North Poll Merinos are clearly delivering quality rams to the commercial market place.

Carcuma North Poll Merinos display heavy cutting fleeces of free growing, bright 19-21 micron wools on large framed and plain bodied sheep with positive carcase attributes; so important for maximising profitability in today’s sheep industry. This was reinforced last year when the Johnsons made their Adelaide Royal showing debut. Their ram entered in the Fibre Meat class did very well and shone out with excellent carcase measurements. They won the autumn shorn medium wool Poll Merino ewe under 1½ yrs class from around 20 other entries. This was the largest autumn shorn ewe class and was a wonderful endorsement of their quality.

In wool quality selection, breeding emphasis continues on lowering CVs and microns and increasing comfort factor without sacrificing wool weights, fibre density, growth rates and body size in the process.

Select infusions of outside genetics have been made with these breeding objectives in mind. Anama 989 & 1142, plus Gunallo ‘Ablett’ 627, 680 & 822 are the latest sires to be successfully used in their AI and paddock matings.

Grant and Carolyn Johnson invite you to inspect their sheep at this year’s Karoonda Merino field day, or on-property any time by appointment. Their 2012 annual on-property sale will be on Wednesday 1st August when they will again offer 40 ‘Better Choices’ Poll Merino rams.
