Pepper Well Poll Merino stud has property at Keyneton, Sedan, Cambrai, and Flinders Island Tasmania. The stud was founded on ewes and rams bought from Ridgway Advance in 2005, has been on the RA blood since 2001 and also shares the vision of the parent stud. Prior to this, Mernowie, Kelvale, Barton Hill, Moorundie Park and Craiglee in the 1990s, 80s and 70s.
At Pepper Well Poll we select for early-maturing, big long-framed sheep, heavily muscled in the right places, loin and hind leg, which is attached to a huge pelvic area. These animals are always covered with uncomplicated skin; draped in very long, bold staples of silky soft, deeply crimped, aligned wool. Mature ewes average 20 microns. We use approx 90% maiden ewes in the stud mob to fast track genetic gain . Also, I dislike pampered stock and our stock are run tough, stud included, with no shedding and little strategic supplementary feeding. Simplistically, it all boils down to how much profit your sheep make for you from each mouthful of grass they eat.
Pepper Well Poll is no-mules, and ceased mulesing with the 2008-drop – too easy. Fertility rates have been as high as 131 per cent lambs marked.
Robust Sheep that breed on, high fertility, good early growth, with excellent wool and the ability to put on weight fast when the feed is on, is what Pepper Well Poll is all about.
The 2010 stud drop of 120 ram lambs weaned at 100 days weighed 40 kg. ave. body weight, tops at 53 kgs body weight ,after trucking and a 24 hr. feed and water curfew. Think about those numbers for a second, that’s some serious early vigour ! To back this up, this years rams are 68kg. at 9mths of age .
Our sale will be held at our Keyneton property on Thursday, September 20th at 11 am, and inspections can be arranged by appointment – no problem, or see us at the Karoonda Merino Field Day on July 27th. Also try friending us at face book to get more info.
