Callowie principals Richard and Jacquie Halliday have been passionate and tireless about improving the quality of their Poll Merinos and the industry in general. Richard Halliday has defined the stud’s breeding objectives as “conformation, constitution, covering, carcase and consistency”. Excellence in these areas is the platform for the Callowie breeding program. With the support of objective measurement data and the services of classer/consultant Paul Cousins, Callowie continues to produce sound-structured, plain-bodied and easy doing sheep with a covering of soft-handling, free-growing wool with low coefficient of variation and standard deviation figures in the productive and profitable 19.5 micron to 21μ range. Select infusions of top genetics are made when appropriate. They formulate their selections from a total sheep perspective, without compromising for short-term opportunistic gains. While progress and recognition may be slow, it ensures they have sound, highly productive and reliable genetics that are repeatable in clients’ flocks. Feedback indicates clients are being well rewarded with very good sheep and wool sale prices. The range of environs Callowie sheep are successfully performing in is wide and a grand endorsement of their adaptability. They extend from annual rainfall regions from 200 millimetres to 700mm, from lighter sandy to heavy clay soils, and at the varying stocking rates and grazing management regimes adopted as a result. Arguably, Callowie Poll Merinos can be described as some of the most under-valued in the state, but in recent years they have sold out of rams through increased demand. This year, Callowie will be displaying at the Broken Hill Ag Fair in May; Australian Sheep and Wool Show at Bendigo in July; the SE Merino Field Day at Keith in July; the Hamilton Sheepvention in August; and the Royal Adelaide Show in September. The Callowie onproperty ram sale will be held on Monday, August 20 at 1pm, offering about 60 rams by auction. Inspections are from 11am or by appointment. Private spring sale selections are welcome from September to December. The Hallidays invite and welcome your inspection and enquiry.
