The renowned and productive Ashrose flock (founded in 1910) has an ideal balance of physical characteristics, large frames, sound conformation and strong constitution, and they perform in a range of environments. The 2007 acquisition of this highly credentialled flock greatly complements Glenstrae Pastoral’s already established Glenstrae stud flock at Willalooka, initially set up to supply rams for the principals’ large commercial Merino flock. Since then, Glenstrae’s principals have also bought the famous Mount Lyndhurst property in the state’s northern pastoral country and with the breaking of the drought that property is thriving, as are the Glenstrae/Ashrose sheep introduced there in the restocking program. Glenstrae principals and management are pleased to see the genetics doing so well in the vastly different environs at their two properties. White, medium wools, with excellent staple length and crimp definition have been consistently developed and improved in both studs through sensible visual selection and objective testing. Glenstrae’s breeding consultant Tom Padbury is overseeing future Ashrose and Glenstrae breeding programs together with Glenstrae’s manager and studmaster Bill Baade. Additions of sires are made on a needs basis combined with a thorough analysis of their suitability to advance the Glenstrae/Ashrose breeding program. The first lambs of Charinga Pearler were dropped in 2010 and he has proven valuable, adding to several other successful Charinga infusions in recent years. This year, the first progeny of the $10,500 Ridgway ram the stud bought from the 2010 Classings Classic are available for sale. He has bred well and exceeded the stud’s expectations. Private selection sale arrangements will be maintained for Ashrose clients as in the past, as there is a clear history that the established Ashrose client base prefers this method of sale. A ram selection day will be staged at Glenstrae’s Braccadale property, Willalooka, on Friday, September 21, together with the Glenstrae stud’s helmsman auction. There will be about 500 rams available for private sales on this day or any other day by arrangement, while about 50 rams will be offered at the Glenstrae helmsman auction at 1pm. Those wishing to select Ashrose and Glenstrae rams in 2012 and beyond can contact Bill Baade or Tom Padbury to arrange a suitable inspection time or attend the stud’s main ram selection day on September 21.
