Kiandra Poll Merino is now well established at Bordertown, after relocating from the Eyre Peninsula where it was founded in 1985. The stud gives high priority to correct body conformation, which instils constitution and doability and results in good cuts of long-stapled wool on a large, long, free-skinned animal with bone and carcase shape. Last year, Kiandra ewes cut 7 kilograms of wool, with a fleece wool average micron of 20.2, 71 per cent yield and weaned 120pc lambs. All lambs had an average weaning weight of 40 kilograms at four months of age and average growth rate of more than 300 grams a day. The wether portion was sold at 6 months with a 22kg carcase weight. Ewe hoggets cut 4kg at 6 months wool growth with a staple length of 70 millimetres. Wool sales peaked at 1250 cents/kg for 5 bales of 18.1μ AAAWRS. These results show the woolmeat balance in modern easy care Merinos. At another on-property auction held last year, more rams were offered and all cleared. The stud saw strong demand for Merinos, particularly the non-mulesed and good doers. Auction and private selection rams sold to many regions, including Kangaroo Island, the Riverina, Eyre Peninsula, Pastoral, Mallee and the south east of South Australia. Many of these breeders topped wool and sheep sales in their region. A regular AI program assures high-quality genetics, with progeny available this year from performing sires and new genetics with outstanding growth and muscle ASBVs. Ram numbers have increased this year, with 250 to choose from. Inspections are welcome. • Details: Ryan and Sarah Kluska, 4611 Emu Flat Road, Senior SA 5268, fax 08 8754 2030, 0428 862 040, kluska@activ8.net.au
