At SWM Merino stud’s fourth Superior Wool Merinos ram sale at Tintinara last year, the high-quality wool on typical South Australian frames was noticeable. Of the 70 rams offered, 59 sold to a $1430 average. Strong interest after sale resulted in a further 30 rams sold, along with a number of ewe sales, and this capped-off a solid sales programme. SWM breeding aims continue to be focussed on producing quality and quantity of wool on a large, plain-bodied sheep that can thrive in all areas. Its large-scale AI program has continued this year, allowing it to produce top progeny in large numbers. With the wool market finishing last year on a strong note, prices for surplus sheep sales were at all-time highs. Demand for quality Merino rams and ewes looks set to continue this year and should bring financial rewards to those who have stuck with their Merino enterprise. The use of Wallaloo Park and Leahcim genetics has allowed the stud to finetune its breeding program to unite high-quality wool genetics with high-quality carcase traits to produce outstanding progeny with very plain bodies. SWM plans to display its rams at the South East Field Day in July and the Sheepvention in Hamilton, Victoria in August. Private inspections by appointment welcome. The stud will host its annual on-property ram sale on Wednesday, September 19 and also sell at Classings Classic ram sale at Murray Bridge on Friday, September 28. • Details: Richard Harkness 0428 758 028, richardharkness@internode.on.net
