I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the South Australian Stud Merino Sheepbreeders Association for electing me as your President for the next two years. I look forward to the challenge and the full co-operation of members. As we head into less than ideal economic times, I see this as an opportunity for the industry to re-evaluate, restructure and unite to set positive goals for the future. I would like to thank the exhibitors at the Adelaide Show and Sale and congratulate the winners in the Show and the sucsessful vendors and purchasers in the Sale. The Supreme exhibit of B.A. Michael & Co and Moorundie Park's $20,500 Sale Ram were indeed highlights of a very successful week. There have also been some wonderful sales of Merino and Poll Merino sheep across the State. Glenlea Merino and Poll Merino Stud $39,000, Collinsville $30,000, Leahcim $22,000, East Bungaree $20,000 to name a few. There have also been some very good on-property sales with total clearances and some that have not been quite as good - this is to be expected when we have a season suchas we have. It is my intention to assist all Studs in promoting the excellent quality of all SA Merino Sheep. On behalf of all members I would like to take this opportunity to thank all sponsors for their support and generosity because without them we could not run the Field Days and the Adelaide Show. When times are tough I believe that the SA Merino is still the most profitable animal to generate farm income and as President I encourage all Stud and Commercial growers to look at the bottom line. It is up to the Stud industry to take the lead and ensure that the future direction and profitability is maintained and that we have a viable industry. I am looking forward to this year and with the assistance of a great management team I can see a sustainable future for our industry. Francis Andrews President November 2008 |
